Boccheggiano suits quiet-seekers who want an old mining village at 664 metres, with most homes having a pool and garden. Airports are over three hours away by public transport, and with only a few hundred residents it has little to fill an evening.
Boccheggiano is a hill village of a little over three hundred people in the Colline Metallifere of Grosseto province, sitting at 664 metres on the provincial road between Massa Marittima and Monticiano. It was an important mining village, and its 13th-century walls still ring the old core, entered through the Porta della Torricella. Inside are the 15th-century parish church of San Bartolomeo, the older San Sebastiano and a municipal theatre built in 1927. The village also has the Giardino dei Suoni, a contemporary art park started by the artist Paul Fuchs. The homes are close together, mostly for four or so; most have a pool and garden, and some have a sauna.
A little town in the Metalliferous Hills, 8 km away, with the Fonti di Sopra springs dating to 1233 and guided visits to an old mining church site.
A 10th-century castle on a cliff above the Pavone stream, later held by Siena and then by the Sergardi barons.
Red ravines and mounds of red earth beside the Merse, left by a late 19th-century way of producing copper.
Pisa is the nearest airport, with Florence a close alternative. By train and taxi the trip from either takes over three hours, so hire a car. Grosseto is about 48 km away.
Mining shaped it. Boccheggiano was an important mining village in the Colline Metallifere, and the copper and silver mines of nearby Montieri, its comune, were among the most important in Tuscany.
Yes, for a short stroll. The medieval core keeps its 13th-century walls and the Porta della Torricella gate, with the churches of San Bartolomeo and San Sebastiano, the 1927 theatre and the Giardino dei Suoni art park.
Around 48 km. The village sits on the provincial road linking Massa Marittima and Monticiano, 8 km from Montieri.
Most do, and most have a garden too. Some also have a sauna, and around half have a fireplace.
