Massa Marittima is a medieval hill town in southern Tuscany, known for its cathedral square and mining past. It is inland at about 380 metres, so the beaches at Follonica are a drive away and you need a car.
Massa Marittima sits at about 380 metres, 49 km north-north-west of Grosseto. Piazza Garibaldi is ringed by the Palazzo del Podestà, the Palazzo del Comune and the Loggia del Mercato, with the Cathedral of San Cerbone looking onto it diagonally. The town grew on silver, copper and pyrite from the Metalliferous Hills, and the last mine closed in 1994; the Mining Museum now runs for about 700 metres through three tunnels. From the Torre del Candeliere you can see the sea as far as Elba. Our homes are spread across the countryside around and below the town, over a good stretch of ground, and most have a private pool.

Pisa airport is one route in, about 1 hour 30 minutes by road. By public transport you take a train from Pisa Centrale to Follonica and then a bus up to Massa Marittima, about three hours in all. A car is needed for the countryside homes and for reaching the coast.
The Balestro del Girifalco crossbow competition is held in front of the cathedral, usually on the fourth Sunday in May and on 14 August, and each summer operas are staged against the backdrop of the cathedral. Follonica is a summer destination, so the beach side of a stay suits warm months. Check dates locally before planning around an event.
