Scarlino suits couples and small families who want a pool near the quiet coves of the Gulf of Follonica. Cala Violina and Cala Martina are reached on foot, and Cala Violina needs a booking in summer. The hill town itself is inland, not on the sea.
Scarlino is a hill town under the Rocca Aldobrandesca, a castle with an irregular pentagonal base and three corner towers, each a different shape. The sea is elsewhere: Puntone di Scarlino, about 8 km away, is the marina village at the mouth of the Pecora, and the coast south of it is mostly rocky, with small coves rather than a long town beach. Our homes are spread over roughly 5 km of this area. Most have a pool and sleep around four, and few sleep more than eight. Cala Martina is a bay of about 600 metres with a rocky seabed, free to enter, with no bars or restaurants. Each August the districts of Scarlino stage Le Carriere del 19, a costumed re-enactment with an archery contest and a relay race.
Fine quartz sand that squeaks underfoot, reached on foot or by bike from Puntone di Scarlino. No lifeguards and no bins, so take your rubbish out.
A bay of about 600 metres in the Bandite di Scarlino reserve. The walk takes at least 45 minutes and is only partly shaded.
The marina village about 8 km from Scarlino, where boats leave for the coves. The marina opened in 2003 and has around 970 berths.
A seaside town on the Gulf of Follonica, with an hourly train from Pisa Centrale taking about an hour and a half.
Two Etruscan sites a few kilometres from Scarlino, according to the Tuscany tourist board.
Pisa airport is the practical choice, about an hour and a half by car to Scarlino. Trains run hourly from Pisa Centrale to Follonica in around one and a half hours, but Scarlino then needs an onward connection. A car is needed for the homes and for the car park at Pian d'Alma.
Summer is the pinch point. From 1 June to 15 September Cala Violina admits 700 people a day, so book ahead through the beach's own reservation site. The path to Cala Martina is only partly shaded, so walk it early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Le Carriere del 19 takes place every August. The tourist board describes the climate around Follonica as mild.
No, you park at Pian d'Alma and then walk or cycle in from Puntone di Scarlino. From 1 June to 15 September entry is capped at 700 people a day, so book first. There are no lifeguards.
No, the town sits on a hill. The marina village of Puntone di Scarlino is about 8 km away on the coast, and the coves lie beyond it in the Bandite di Scarlino reserve.
Pick Scarlino for a pool and quiet coves; pick Follonica if you want a town with an hourly train from Pisa Centrale. Follonica's beaches are narrower and affected by erosion.
Not very. The walk takes at least 45 minutes, the path is only partly shaded, and the free beach has no bars or restaurants. Boats from the marina at Puntone are the alternative.
Le Carriere del 19 takes place every August. The town's districts compete in archery and a relay race, with costumed processions that mark the end of the 1855 cholera epidemic.
