About Pescia
Pescia is a town of nearly 20,000 people at 68 metres on the river Pescia, between Lucca and Florence in the province of Pistoia. The river splits the old town into a cathedral side and a town hall side. Silk mills came first, earning it the name little Manchester of Tuscany in the 19th century, then paper mills and tanneries; today it is a carnation market, and the Old Flower Market dates from 1951. The homes spread through the hills around the town, about 7 km across; most have a pool and a garden, and many a fireplace. Behind the town lie the Svizzera Pesciatina's old hill villages. Evenings are low-key, with the Giovanni Pacini theatre the one listed venue; it is not a resort.

Is Pescia good for families?
Yes. Collodi, the Pinocchio village, is close to the town and has Pinocchio Park and the Villa Garzoni garden. Most homes here have a pool and a garden, which suits children, though you need a car.
What is Pescia known for?
Flowers and, historically, silk and paper. Pescia is an international market centre for carnations, its Old Flower Market dates from 1951, and 19th-century silk production earned it the name little Manchester of Tuscany.
Is Pescia near Lucca?
Yes, it lies between Lucca and Florence, in the province of Pistoia, not in Lucca's own province. It is a separate town on the river Pescia, and the train from Pisa airport changes at Lucca.
What is the Palio degli Arcieri in Pescia?
An archery contest between four districts, Ferraia, S. Maria, S. Michele and S. Francesco, held on 1 September in honour of the patron saint, Santa Dorotea. The prize is usually a hand-painted cloth.
How far is Pisa airport from Pescia?
About 25 miles, roughly 50 minutes by car. The train, changing at Lucca, takes about 1 hour 20 minutes, which is slower but works if your home is near Pescia station.
