Lucca suits couples and families who want a walled Tuscan city to walk and cycle round, with Pisa airport about 30 minutes away. Homes are scattered around it rather than inside the walls, so you will drive to the centre and park outside.
Lucca is a city of around 89,000 people whose walls remain intact, with a walkway linking the bastions and gates and about 4 km of tree-lined paths around them. Inside, the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro still follows the outline of the Roman amphitheatre, and the 14th-century Guinigi Tower, 45 metres high, has oak trees growing on its roof. Puccini was born here. Our homes are not in the centre: they are spread over roughly 8 km around it, and nearly half have a pool and most a garden, with a minority of large houses for eight or more. Evenings are mostly spent in the old town, and in summer concerts at the Lucca Summer Festival add to that. Autumn is the wettest season, so plan indoor stops for out-of-season visits.
The airport is about 27 minutes by road from Lucca, and trains run between the two cities in under an hour.
Village known for the elaborate water gardens of Villa Garzoni, about 22 minutes by car from Lucca.
Where Puccini spent his summers; an opera festival is held there every summer.
Garden estate with fountains and sculptures, built by merchant nobility in the 1600s, passed on the walls circuit.
Pisa airport is the one to use, about 27 minutes by road from Lucca, with easyJet from Gatwick and Luton and Ryanair from Stansted. Trains from Pisa take under an hour. A car is needed for most of our homes, and Lucca's centre is best reached by parking outside the walls.
Summers are hot and humid, with highs of 30 degrees or more, and the Summer Festival brings concerts in July. Autumn is the wettest season. Lucca Comics and Games, described as Europe's largest festival of its kind, also brings crowds, so book accommodation early for that week.
Yes inside the walls. The centre is compact, and the route round the walls is about 4 km of tree-lined paths. Our homes sit outside the centre, so you will drive in and leave the car outside the walls.
A walkway links the bastions and gates, and a roughly 4 km ride around them on tree-lined paths passes Palazzo Pfanner. Check locally whether bikes may use the wall-top itself before you go.
Lucca is the better base for most. Its walled centre is the stronger evening destination, and the airport is only about 27 minutes away. Pisa is a day trip by train.
Yes. Puccini was born in Lucca, and a Puccini opera festival runs each July and August at Torre del Lago, where he spent his summers.
Hot and humid, with the Lucca Summer Festival bringing concerts in July. Lucca Comics and Games is the other big event. Expect higher demand for homes in those periods.
