Toirano suits couples who want a medieval village in western Liguria, with its famous show caves just over a kilometre from the centre. Homes are small, mostly one bedroom, and a pool is not something to count on, so plan on the car for beach days.
Toirano is an old village on the western Ligurian Riviera, set on the Varatella, which is crossed here by a 14th-century three-arch bridge. Medieval walls, tower houses and loggias survive, and the oldest quarter is still called Turaccu, medieval Latin for tower foot. It began as a Roman settlement and Byzantine fortification. The Church of St Martin keeps a 14th-century bell tower, and Palazzo del Carretto houses the valley museum of farm, craft and household tools. The village has held the Touring Club's Orange Flag since 2006. The homes sit together in the village itself, and the caves lie just over a kilometre outside.
Limestone show caves just over a kilometre from the village, including the Basura and Santa Lucia Inferiore caves, with cave bear traces and Neanderthal footprints.
Sanctuary beside the caves with a wide view over Val Varatella; legend makes the Buranco chasm in the Varatella stream a gate to the Underworld.
Genoa airport is about 60 km from Toirano and Nice about 95 km. Drive if you can: the A10 motorway exit at Borghetto Santo Spirito is about 5 km from the caves. Trains from Genova Sestri Ponente run to Loano roughly every two hours.
The Festa dei Gunbi falls in the first week of August, when the old centre's wineries open in the evening and stalls serve farinata, panizza and peaches with Pigato. In winter the local kitchen turns to zemin, a traditional soup, and zeraria, a squash cake, along with jam-filled gobeletti.
Just over a kilometre. The show caves opened in 1953 with 1,280 metres of tunnels to visit, including the Basura and Santa Lucia Inferiore caves, with stalactites, crystal flowers and prehistoric bear traces.
Take the A10 motorway and leave at Borghetto Santo Spirito, an exit about 5 km from the caves. Genoa airport is about 60 km away, so a hire car is the simplest way in.
In the first week of August. Gunbi is the dialect word for the old oil mills, and the festival serves local food such as farinata, panizza and peaches with Pigato.
Better for couples or a family of three or four. Most homes have one bedroom and the largest sleep five; check each listing for a garden, a pool or air conditioning.
