Castellaro suits families and groups of up to eight who want a quiet Ligurian hill village near the sandy shore at Arma di Taggia. You will need a car, as the village sits on a ridge and Nice airport is about an hour's drive away.
Castellaro is one small village of about 1,260 people on a ridge in the hills behind Taggia, with no outlying hamlets. Olive groves cover the slopes, though flower growing is the main local business. In the village are the Baroque parish church of San Pietro in Vincoli, finished in 1634, two oratories, the Palazzo dei Gentile and the remains of the castle tower and walls. About a kilometre out, a road lined with fifteen chapels of the Stations of the Cross climbs to the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Lampedusa. Riva Ligure borders the village to the south, on the coast. Our homes are all in or right beside the village; most sleep about six, a few sleep eight, and one has a pool.
About 1 km from the village, up a road of fifteen chapels; a captive sailor is said to have escaped pirates using its painting as a sail.
Taggia's seaside district, with a shallow sandy shore, free and organised beaches and a small marina.
A town inside 16th-century walls, known for the Taggiasca olive, the Convent of St Dominic and a sixteen-arch medieval bridge.
A 24 km coastal route from San Lorenzo al Mare towards Sanremo, through tunnels and past Riva Ligure and Arma di Taggia.
Nice airport is about 70 km away, roughly an hour by car to Taggia. The train takes nearer two hours, with a change at Ventimiglia for Taggia Arma, the closest station, and from there you still need to get up the hill, so hire a car.
Not on foot. The village sits on a ridge, bordered by Riva Ligure on the coast to the south, so you drive down for a swim. Arma di Taggia, close by, has a shallow sandy shore with free and organised beaches.
A pilgrimage church about a kilometre from the village, reached by a road with fifteen Stations of the Cross chapels. Tradition says Andrea Anfosso, a sailor held by Barbary pirates, escaped by using its painting as a sail.
Yes. The Riviera dei Fiori coastal park path runs 24 km from San Lorenzo al Mare towards Sanremo, passing Riva Ligure and Arma di Taggia below the village, partly through tunnels and along the sea.
