Montefiascone suits couples and small families who want a hill town above Lake Bolsena, with summer lake beaches below. Rome Fiumicino is almost two hours' drive away and the rail link is awkward, so plan on hiring a car.
Montefiascone is a hill town of around 13,500 people at about 590 metres, on a ridge above the south-east side of Lake Bolsena and some 100 km north of Rome. The Rocca dei Papi, remains of the old papal summer residence, crowns the hilltop with views over the water, and the 17th-century dome of the cathedral of Santa Margherita marks the skyline. San Flaviano, a double church whose two levels face opposite ways, has 14th-century frescoes and a 16th-century loggia, and marks the start of the Via Francigena route towards Orvieto. Below lies Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic lake in Europe. The homes are in and close to the town.
The lakeside town that gives the lake its name, extending up the north-east shore of the water.
The lake's largest island, about 17 hectares, reached by ferry from Capodimonte, a town on a headland that forms a sheltered harbour.
A village on a tufa spur reached only by a panoramic concrete bridge, with the eroding Valle dei Calanchi around it.
Rome Fiumicino is just under two hours' drive away. Rail from Rome runs to Viterbo, from where you need onward transport, so a car is the practical choice for the airport run and for the lake beaches.
Summer is the season for the lake: each lakeside municipality marks out a stretch of beach for swimming, and some have cafés and boat hire. Outside summer, Montefiascone's churches, the Rocca dei Papi and the Via Francigena towards Orvieto are the reasons to come.
Yes, in summer. Each lakeside municipality has a designated stretch of beach for swimming, some with cafés, restaurants and boat hire, and Montefiascone sits on the ridge just above the south-east shore.
Montefiascone's local wine takes its name from a legend about the 12th-century German prelate Johannes Defuk, who praised the wine here with the word Est. A traveller's grave linked to the legend lies in the crypt of San Flaviano.
For small families it works well. Most homes here have a private pool, but check each listing, and they sleep two to eight, usually with two bedrooms. The lake shore lies just below the town.
