Gallicano, in Tuscany's Serchio valley below Monte Pania, suits couples who want a pool and walks in the Garfagnana. Choice is small, just a handful of homes for two, and this is the Gallicano in the province of Lucca, about 25 km from Lucca itself.
Gallicano is a village of under 4,000 people at 186 metres in the mid Serchio valley, with the Apuan Alps on one side and the Apennines on the other. It is borderland, and its history was shaped in turn by Lucca, the Este and Florence. The church of San Jacopo inside the old walls holds a glazed terracotta attributed to Andrea della Robbia. On 25 July the feast of San Jacopo brings a palio of papier-mâché floats. The homes sit together, each with one bedroom and a pool.
Medieval town whose cathedral was built more than a thousand years ago, with views over the valley and mountains.
Cave at Fornovolasco named for its strong air currents, with guided tours of one, two or three hours.
Home of the Devil's Bridge, or Ponte della Maddalena, a medieval bridge in the Serchio valley with unevenly spaced rounded arches.
Pisa airport is about 58 km away, roughly an hour by car. Trains from Pisa via Lucca reach Barga-Gallicano station in just under two hours. A car is needed for the valley and mountains.
