Bagnoregio suits families and groups who want a countryside base in northern Lazio, with Civita di Bagnoregio just across the valley. Expect to drive everywhere: the homes are out in the countryside beyond the town, and Rome Fiumicino is about two hours away by car.
Bagnoregio is a town in the Tuscia area of Viterbo province. From the belvedere at the tip of its historic centre, a public park on the site of an old Franciscan convent, you look across the Valle dei Calanchi to Civita, about 300 metres away on its tufa spur. Civita belongs to Bagnoregio, has only a handful of residents and is reached solely by a pedestrian bridge, with paid entry. Its nickname, the dying town, comes from the writer Bonaventura Tecchi. The homes are in open country outside the town, larger places with gardens for six or more.
The eroding hill village opposite the town, reached only by a footbridge built in 1965; there is an entry charge.
The lake to the west of the Valle dei Calanchi, the valley of gullies where Civita stands, with the Tiber valley on its eastern side.
Fly to Rome Fiumicino; the drive to Bagnoregio takes about two hours. Trains from the airport via Roma Termini run to Orvieto, but you would still need a car or taxi from there, so hire one at the airport.
On foot, across the pedestrian bridge built in 1965. Only residents and authorised people may use bikes or motorbikes at set times, and visitors have paid an entry fee since June 2013.
Head for the belvedere at the tip of the historic centre, along Via Bonaventura Tecchi. It looks over the Valle dei Calanchi straight at Civita, with paid parking nearby.
Tradition says St Francis healed the gravely ill young Giovanni Fidanza and called out 'bona ventura' as he left. He took the name Bonaventura, and steps on the east side of the belvedere park lead down to a grotto named after him, an old Etruscan tomb turned chapel.
Yes. Homes here sleep six to ten, with three bedrooms on average and gardens; many have a fireplace and more than half a private pool, so check each listing.
