Terracina suits families and Roman-history fans who want a pool near the sea, with the Temple of Jupiter Anxur above town. Ferries run to Ponza. Many homes here have a pool, but check each listing. They sit outside the old centre, so a car is part of the deal.
Terracina is a large coastal town of around 46,000 people, 56 km south-east of Rome on the Via Appia, overlooking the old Pontine Marshes. Its present main square is the ancient Roman forum, and the cathedral of Santi Pietro e Cesareo, consecrated in 1074, sits within a Roman temple. A small modern port lies close to the silted-up Roman harbour. At Pisco Montano, a cut through the rock finished early in Trajan's reign carries the road, with marks on the wall showing its depth. The homes are grouped together outside the historic centre.
On Monte Sant'Angelo above the sea, a terraced Roman sanctuary with views over the Pontine Islands, Ischia and Circeo.
An island reached by ferry from Terracina's port, for a full day out at sea.
A castle dominates its port, Serapo beach has fine golden sand, and the local tiella is a filled focaccia, often with octopus.
Rome Ciampino is the nearest airport, about an hour and a half by car. Fiumicino and Naples are the other options. Terracina is not on the main Rome to Naples railway and its own branch line is out of service, so hire a car.
Yes, especially for those who want a pool. Many homes here have one, but check each listing for a pool, garden or air conditioning. Terracina's beaches have held a Blue Flag and a Green Flag, an award for beaches suited to young children.
It dates from between the mid-second and mid-first century BC, built over an earlier place of worship. A terraced platform on twelve linked arches is still well preserved on top of Monte Sant'Angelo.
You can. Ferries connect Terracina with Ponza from the small modern port, which lies next to the silted-up harbour of Roman times.
On the first Sunday after 16 July, the town's fishermen honour the Madonna del Carmine with a long procession that leaves the port and heads out to sea in a line of boats.
