Formia suits island-hoppers and history fans who want ferries to Ponza and Ventotene and InterCity trains to Rome or Naples from one base. Homes are in town, mostly with two bedrooms, and pools are not a feature, so check each listing. This is a town of 37,000 people rather than a quiet resort.
Formia is a sizeable town on the Tyrrhenian coast of southern Lazio, near the Campania border and halfway between Rome and Naples. Wealthy Romans built villas here, and the old Appian Way still runs past the 24-metre tower long identified as Cicero's tomb. The modern town grew from two burghs, Mola by the sea and Castellone, united again in 1863 under the name Formia, and badly damaged in 1943 and 1944. Vindicio is the central town beach; Gianola, inside a regional park, is more private. The homes are close together in the town itself.
A nearby town, with a historic centre among Italy's most beautiful villages and Serapo beach of fine golden sand.
An island reached by ferry or hydrofoil from Formia, as are Ventotene and Ischia, for a long day out on the water.
The more private of Formia's beaches, set inside a regional park on the coast.
Naples is the nearest airport, around an hour and a quarter by car. Without a car, take the Alibus into Naples, walk to Napoli Centrale and catch an InterCity to Formia-Gaeta, also about an hour and a quarter. A car is optional in town, as buses run to Gaeta and Minturno.
Yes. Ferries and hydrofoils connect Formia with Ponza and Ventotene, and with Ischia, which makes the town a practical base for island days on this coast.
Vindicio is the central beach and suits families. Gianola is more private and sits inside a regional park on the coast.
Very. Formia-Gaeta station, on the north side of the centre, is on the Rome to Naples line, and every InterCity passing through stops there, as well as regional trains.
A mausoleum traditionally identified as Cicero's tomb stands on the old Appian Way. It is a tower about 24 metres high, and Cicero was killed on the Appian Way just outside the town in 43 BC.
