About Meina
Meina is a small comune of around 2,400 people in the province of Novara, Piedmont, in the southern part of Lake Maggiore, about 40 km north of Novara and 77 km north-west of Milan. It is often called the village of villas. Villa Eden is a neo-Palladian palace, and Villa Faraggiana, begun in 1855 on the shore between Meina and Arona, stands in ample gardens of exotic plants. The town hall is built of coloured local granite and has ceiling frescoes in its council room. During the Second World War, German SS soldiers killed 16 Italian Jews here, an event that inspired the film Hotel Meina.
