Laveno-Mombello suits families and rail travellers who want the Lombardy shore of Lake Maggiore with a 20-minute boat to Verbania. Homes here usually have three bedrooms and sleep up to seven. Pools are not a feature and few list a garden, so check each listing and expect a town stay rather than a garden retreat.
Laveno-Mombello is a lake town of around eight and a half thousand people in the province of Varese, sitting at the foot of the Sasso del Ferro with Stresa and Verbania facing it across the water. It was formed in 1927 from Laveno, Mombello and Cerro, and its ceramics industry, founded in 1856, ended only in 1997; the International Museum of Ceramic Design in Palazzo Perabò keeps that story. The homes are close together in the town itself. Tuesday brings the weekly market; around 1800 the town grew into a trade hub with a major grain exchange. In Mombello, the small oratory of Santa Maria di Corte holds a 16th-century fresco.
Part of Verbania on the western shore, linked to Laveno by car ferry; boats run every half hour and take about 20 minutes.
The town that gives the province its name, about 25 km south-east of Laveno-Mombello.
Fly to Milan Malpensa, around 40 minutes away by car. Trains take about an hour and a half with a change at Gallarate. The town has two stations, one on the national network and one on the Ferrovienord line, so a car is optional here.
Take the boat. A state-run service crosses from Laveno to Verbania every 30 minutes and takes about 20 minutes, and a car ferry links the town with Intra.
Yes, every Tuesday. Trade has deep roots here: around 1800 Laveno grew into a trade hub with a major grain exchange market.
Easily. From Malpensa airport, trains run via Gallarate in about an hour and a half. The town has two stations, Laveno-Mombello on the national network and Laveno-Mombello Nord on Ferrovienord.
Ceramics. The industry's foundations were laid here in 1856 and the last works closed in 1997, and the International Museum of Ceramic Design, founded in 1971, tells that history from Palazzo Perabò.
