Germignaga suits couples and small families who want a quiet Lake Maggiore base next to Luino and its big Wednesday market. Homes are compact, sleeping three to six, and none has a pool. For trains, boats and the market you go next door to Luino.
Germignaga is a lakeside comune on the Lombard side of Lake Maggiore, in the province of Varese, at around 200 metres above sea level. It looks over the mouth of the Tresa, the short river that drains Lake Lugano into Lake Maggiore and marks much of the Swiss border on the way. In 1276 the Visconti fleet beat the Torriani off this shore, and the castle that guarded the route between the two lakes probably stood where the cemetery is now. Luino, the neighbouring town, has the station and a regular boat service around the lake. Our homes are grouped together rather than scattered up the hillside.
Neighbouring town on the eastern shore whose Wednesday market is said to be one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
Border crossing where the Tresa leaves Lake Lugano; a bridge links the Swiss and Italian sides, with a customs post dividing them.
Swiss lake town across the border, about 40 minutes' drive from Germignaga, also reachable by train via Cadenazzo.
Fly to Milan Malpensa: the drive to Germignaga takes about 55 minutes. By rail, change at Gallarate for Luino, around an hour and three quarters in total. A car helps for exploring both shores, though boats from Luino reach other towns around the lake.
Yes. It sits on the Lombard side of the lake, overlooking the mouth of the Tresa river, and borders Luino. The Tresa links Lake Lugano with Lake Maggiore after a short course of about 13 km.
Wednesdays. Luino's weekly market is said to be one of the largest of its kind in Europe, and a Wednesday morning there is an easy outing from Germignaga.
You can, with one change. Take the train from Malpensa Terminal 1 to Gallarate and on to Luino, next door, in about an hour and three quarters. Driving takes roughly 55 minutes.
Very. The Tresa, which reaches the lake beside Germignaga, marks the border between Varese province and the Swiss canton of Ticino for most of its course, and the Swiss town of Locarno is about 40 minutes away by car.
