Baveno suits couples and small families who want boats to the Borromean Islands from the pier and a train line into Milan. Homes are modest, mostly two bedrooms for four to six, and pools are not a feature, so check each listing. Evenings are quiet, with most cafés shutting early.
Baveno is a lakeside town of around five thousand people on the Piedmont shore of Lake Maggiore, on the western shore north of Stresa. It made its name on granite: stone from quarries north-west of the town went into columns for Milan Cathedral and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. The old centre is made up of two quarters, Domo and Baitone, whose narrow lanes give views down to the lake, and the Romanesque church of Santi Gervasio e Protasio has its own baptistery. The homes sit close together in the town. Nightlife outside the hotels is thin, and the cafés usually close around eight.
Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatori are all served by boats from Baveno's pier.
Part of the town of Verbania, reached by boat from Baveno's pier.
Fly to Milan Malpensa, about an hour's drive. Trains from the airport take around two hours with a change at Gallarate, and Baveno station is on the Milan to Domodossola line, though long-distance trains do not stop. The A26 motorway passes west of town.
By boat from the town pier. Services run to Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatori, and also to Intra, part of Verbania.
Yes, every Monday. The town also has a small grocery and a tobacconist near the church, with a bank and cash machine close to the ferry pier.
It works, with patience. From Malpensa airport the train takes around two hours with a change at Gallarate. Regional trains on the Milan to Domodossola line stop at Baveno, but long-distance services pass through.
Granite cut from the quarries north-west of the town. It supplied columns for Milan Cathedral, the basilica of San Paolo fuori le Mura in Rome and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan.
