Lago di Mezzola suits quiet stays beside a small lake north of Lake Como, with the Pian di Spagna wetland reserve and birdwatching close by. It is a separate lake rather than the main one, and none of the homes has a private pool.
Lago di Mezzola is a lake, not a town. It lies north of Lake Como, separated from it by the Pian di Spagna, a wetland built from silt left by the flooding Adda; in antiquity the lake was the northern branch of Lake Como itself. The Mera river is its largest inflow and its only outflow. Villages ring the shore: Novate Mezzola at the north, Verceia, San Fedele and Bocca d'Adda on the east side, and Dascio and Albonico, parts of Sorico, on the west. Our homes are spread over a few kilometres around the lake, mostly sleeping about five, and many have a garden. The lake and plain form a nature reserve, with waterbirds and waders along the shore and pike, perch and tench in the water.
The wetland between the lake and Lake Como, protected with the lake as a nature reserve.
At the top of Lake Como on the Lecco to Tirano railway, about nine minutes by taxi from the reserve.
The end of a regional branch line that splits off the Lecco to Tirano railway at Colico.
A village on the west shore whose Oratorio di San Fedele was built in the 10th or 11th century.
Milan Bergamo airport is about an hour and a quarter by car from Colico, which is a short drive from the lake. Trains on the Lecco to Tirano line serve Colico, with an hourly connection on to Dubino for the reserve, but homes are spread around the lake, so plan on a car.
The mid-lake boat service on Lake Como runs hourly through the day in the summer season; at other times check the timetable at the quay or online. The Splugen pass is closed from the end of autumn to the beginning of spring, which matters for any trip toward Switzerland by that road. Trains run separate winter and summer timetables.
No. It is a separate small lake to the north, divided from Lake Como by the Pian di Spagna wetland and linked by the Mera river. In antiquity it was the northern branch of Lake Como.
Birdwatching and fishing. Many waterbirds and waders use the shore, and the water holds pike, perch, tench, carp and rudd. The lake and the Pian di Spagna form a nature reserve.
Novate Mezzola lies at the north end, Verceia, San Fedele and Bocca d'Adda on the east shore, and Dascio and Albonico, parts of Sorico, on the west shore.
Partly. Trains on the Lecco to Tirano line serve Colico, and an hourly Trenord service runs from Colico to Dubino, from where you can walk to the reserve, but you would still need a car for most homes.
No. None of our homes by the lake has a private pool, though many have a garden and most have wifi.
