Gera Lario is a small lakeside town at the northern end of Lake Como, beside the Pian di Spagna wetland reserve. The catch is distance: it is about 80 km north of Milan, a long way from the lake's central villages.
Gera Lario is a small comune of under a thousand people at the top of Lake Como, where the Adda and Mera rivers flow in. The Pian di Spagna and Lago di Mezzola reserve, set up in 1985, covers a wetland that separates Mezzola from the main lake, and Gera Lario is one of its municipalities. Lake Como itself is deep and shaped like an inverted Y, and in the afternoon the Breva blows up it from the south. The homes are close together in and around the town. Most are small, sleeping around four, with a garden in many and a fireplace in some; a private pool is the exception. Colico, next door, has the railway station.
A 1,586-hectare wetland and lake reserve, partly within Gera Lario and neighbouring Sorico.
Neighbouring town on the eastern shore; trains from Milano Centrale run here, and the Sentiero Valtellina cycle path starts here.
A Lake Como town linked to Gera Lario by the C19 bus, the last leg of the bus route up from Como.
Neighbouring municipality, also part of the Pian di Spagna and Lago di Mezzola reserve.
Milan Malpensa is about 66 miles away, roughly 1 hour 50 minutes by road. The train route runs from Malpensa to Milano Centrale and on to Colico and takes nearly four hours, with buses little quicker, so a car is the realistic way to reach homes in and above the town.
The Breva, an afternoon wind from the south, shapes days on the water, while a morning breeze from the north, the Tivano, runs the other way. The reserve and the cycle path are walkable and rideable whenever the weather allows. Check bus and train times before relying on them, especially outside the main holiday weeks.
Yes, at its northern end, where the Adda and Mera rivers flow in. It lies in the province of Como, beside the Pian di Spagna and Lago di Mezzola reserve.
About 80 km north of Milan. From Malpensa the drive takes around 1 hour 50 minutes, while the train means a change at Milano Centrale on the way to Colico, taking nearly four hours.
Yes. The Sentiero Valtellina, a 114 km path following the Adda, starts at neighbouring Colico, and its first stage runs from Colico to Sondrio through Morbegno.
Yes. The Breva blows up Lake Como from the south in the afternoon, and the Tivano comes down from the north in the morning, so conditions on the water change through the day.
Few do. Most homes are small, sleeping around four, with a garden in many and a fireplace in some, so a private pool is the exception rather than the rule.
