Forio (west Ischia)

Forio is the main town on Ischia's west coast, with the white church of the Soccorso on a headland facing the sunset. Citara beach is home to the Giardini Poseidon, a large thermal park of hot pools by the sea. Just north is La Mortella, the garden created by the composer William Walton and his wife. Some boats from Naples dock at Forio, and Ischia Porto is around 20 minutes by road.

Best for: Sunsets, thermal gardens and Citara beach

Not for you if: You want quiet beaches in August: Forio's centre and Citara are packed in high summer.

Ischia Barano and the Maronti beach (south)

Barano is a hill village on the south side of Ischia, above the Maronti, the longest beach on the island. Steam and hot water rise from the sand at its western end, and water taxis run along the shore to Sant'Angelo, a car-free fishing village. Cavascura, a hot spring used since Roman times, sits in a gorge a short walk from the beach. Ischia Porto is around 20 to 25 minutes by road.

Best for: Families who want the island's longest sandy beach

Not for you if: You don't like steep roads: the road down to the Maronti is a run of hairpins, and parking is tight.

Ischia Ponte and Ischia Porto (east)

Ischia Porto is where most boats from Naples arrive, set around a round harbour that was once a crater lake. A long street of shops and cafés leads to Ischia Ponte, where a causeway crosses to the Castello Aragonese on its rock. Cartaromana beach is just beyond, looking back at the castle. Buses leave the port for every part of the island.

Best for: Ferries, shops, the Aragonese Castle and car-free evenings

Not for you if: You want quiet evenings: the Corso between the two is busy until late in summer.

Capri

We have one villa on Capri, so choice is very limited. The island is at its best early and late, when the day-trippers have gone: walk to the Arco Naturale or the ruins of Villa Jovis, or take the chairlift up Monte Solaro from Anacapri. Boat trips into the Blue Grotto only run in calm seas. Hydrofoils go to Naples and Sorrento, and to Ischia in summer.

Best for: Couples who want walks and views once the day-trippers have gone

Not for you if: You want space or value: Capri is small, crowded by day in summer and expensive.

When to go to Ischia/Capri/Procida

May, June and September are the best months, with a warm sea and fewer crowds than midsummer. July and August are hot and busy as Neapolitans head for the islands, and around Ferragosto on 15 August beaches and boats are full. Ischia's thermal parks open from around April to October, and spring and autumn are good times to use them. In winter many hotels, restaurants and beach clubs close and ferries run less often, though Ischia stays more lived-in than Capri.
