Lignano Pineta suits families who want an Adriatic beach resort laid out among pines, with bikes as the easy way round. It is a planned summer resort, not an old town, and most hotels and restaurants shut outside May to September.
Lignano Pineta is a district of Lignano Sabbiadoro in the province of Udine. Building began on 5 June 1953, when a tractor ploughed through the dunes of the pine forest, and the architect Marcello D'Olivo gave it a spiral main road. Magazines of the time praised the plan but accused it of scarring the landscape. The beach is around 8 km in total, split between Sabbiadoro, Pineta and Riviera, with equipped sections with restaurants and bars. Most homes have air conditioning, many have gardens and a good number a pool. Pineta has plenty of nightlife venues, and young people crowd it and Sabbiadoro on Saturday nights. Distances between districts are short, so bicycles and mopeds work better than cars.
An island town with a pedestrian-only old town and two large sandy beaches, reached in summer by passenger boat from Lignano.

Trieste Airport has Ryanair flights from London Stansted and is about 50 minutes' drive away; Venice Marco Polo is the alternative, with flights from Heathrow, Gatwick, Bristol and Manchester. Most visitors arrive by car. The nearest station is Latisana-Lignano-Bibione, linked to the resort by the LignanoLink service. You can manage without a car on site.
The tourist season runs from May to September, and most hotels and restaurants close outside it. Buses can be full at peak times. On 21 June a summer concert is held at the Red Lighthouse at the eastern tip. Daytime traffic is chaotic in season, so leave the car at your accommodation and use a bike.
Yes, for beach and bike holidays. The beach is around 8 km long, with equipped sections, distances between districts are short, and Parco Zoo Punta Verde is in Lignano. It is busiest and loudest on Saturday nights.
Pineta has the nightlife and the busier street life, while Riviera, at the Tagliamento end next to Bibione, is known for wide beaches and tranquillity. Pineta suits younger visitors; Riviera suits those who want quiet.
It is the main road of the planned street layout designed by Marcello D'Olivo, with building starting in 1953. The green spiral on Lignano Sabbiadoro's coat of arms is said to recall Pineta's streets.
Mostly not. The tourist season runs from May to September, and most hotels, restaurants and other establishments close in winter, so a winter stay means a quiet resort with few places open.
