About Reggello
Reggello is a hill municipality of about 16,000 people on the north-western side of the Pratomagno range, at around 390 metres. It is a scatter of hamlets, among them Cascia, Leccio and Vallombrosa, rather than one tight centre. The homes sit in the hills around the town; nearly all have a pool and a garden, and most sleep a family rather than a large group. Around them are olive terraces, vineyards and the beech and fir woods of the Vallombrosa reserve. Cascia has a Romanesque church and a museum of sacred art with a 1422 triptych. Evenings are quiet and local, and anything livelier means going into Florence.
Is Reggello right for you?
- Best for
- Walkers and forest lovers who want Florence as a day trip
- Not for you if
- You want a beach or a town square on the doorstep, because Reggello is inland hill country spread over many hamlets.

Getting to Reggello
Florence airport is about 40 minutes by car, which is the practical way to arrive. By public transport it takes well over two hours from the airport, using the tram, a train to Pontassieve or Figline Valdarno, then a bus. With homes in the hills, plan on hiring a car.
When to go to Reggello
Summer is the draw. Reggello is one of the cool, shaded towns closest to Florence, where Florentines go to escape the heat, and the Vallombrosa arboretum can be visited in the summer months. At the end of October and the start of November the olive oil review marks the start of the oil season, with producers' stands in Piazza Aldo Moro.

Reggello villa holidays: questions answered
Can you walk in the Vallombrosa forest from Reggello?
Yes. Walks include the Anello dei Giganti, about 3.5 km and roughly an hour and a half, and a 10 km writers' route around Vallombrosa. A forest trail also leads to Italy's tallest tree, a 62.45 metre Douglas fir.
Is Reggello cooler than Florence in summer?
It is one of the cool, shaded towns nearest Florence, set among the Vallombrosa woods, and Florentines come to escape the heat. It gives no figures, but the forest climbs to 1,450 metres, so the hills above the town are the fresher part.
How far is Reggello from Florence?
Reggello is about 35 km south-east of Florence. The airport is around 40 minutes by car, while the same journey on trams, trains and buses takes more than two hours, so most visitors drive.
Is Reggello known for olive oil?
Yes. Its extra virgin oil is known as green gold, grown on terraced hillsides, and a review of Reggello oil is held each year at the end of October and start of November, marking the start of the oil season.
Can you visit Sammezzano Castle near Reggello?
Check before you plan around it. The castle at Leccio was redesigned between 1853 and 1889 in an Eastern style, but it is private and closed to visitors. The abbey at Vallombrosa is the sight you can count on.
