Impruneta is a terracotta town in the hills just south of Florence, suited to couples and small families wanting a pool and a garden. The city is reached by bus or a short drive, and a car is the easier option.
Impruneta lies between the Ema stream and the Greve river, among hills of vineyards, olive groves, woods and cereal fields that slope down towards Florence. It has made terracotta since the Middle Ages, and its kilns produced the tiles for Brunelleschi's dome on Florence cathedral. The Sanctuary of Santa Maria, founded in 1060, is the main landmark. The homes are grouped tightly around the town, and nearly all have a private pool and a garden. They are mostly small, sized for two to four people, and none sleep more than seven. In late September the town holds a grape festival with parades of floats, and in October a fair around the feast of its patron saint.
Bus 39 runs to Impruneta from the Autostazione, and Florence airport is about 25 minutes away by car.
A monastery founded in 1341 on Monte Acuto where the Ema and Greve meet, with Pontormo lunettes and a shop selling residents' products.
A small town about 5 km from central Florence, which was its own municipality until 1931.
Florence airport is the closest, about 25 minutes by car. Public transport from the airport takes just under two hours, with a tram and bus 39 from the Florence Autostazione. A car is the easier way to link the hill homes with the city.
The grape festival is held on the last Sunday of September, during the harvest, with floats, folk dances and tastings. The Fiera di San Luca follows in October and runs for over a week with markets, food stands and games. Terracotta workshops and the sanctuary suit any season, so check opening times outside spring and autumn.

Terracotta. It has been made here since the Middle Ages, including the tiles for Brunelleschi's dome, and many furnaces still produce vases, jars and amphoras, with the jars used in winemaking.
