Santa Cristina suits skiers and summer walkers who want the middle village of Val Gardena, with the Saslong World Cup piste on the doorstep. Homes here tend to sleep six or more, so groups do well. Only some have a pool, so check each listing, and the valley's main town is Ortisei, next door to the west.
Santa Cristina is a Ladin-speaking village of around two thousand people, strung along Val Gardena between Ortisei to the west and Selva to the east. The municipality climbs from about 1,250 metres to over 3,000, and part of it lies in the Puez-Odle Natural Park. The homes are spread around the village along the valley rather than in one cluster. Tourism runs in two seasons: skiing in winter, then walkers from June to October. The 17th-century Castel Gardena, built by the Wolkenstein counts, is private and closed to visitors, but the parish church, first recorded in the 14th century, has a Gothic wooden choir.
The valley's main town, just to the west, known for its wood-carving tradition and as an important ski centre.
Within Santa Cristina's own territory, with a cross-country ski centre, two small ski jumps and a 1930s chapel designed by Franz Baumann.
Chiusa is the starting point for the walk up to the Sabiona monastery, seat of the local diocese until around the year 1000.
Bolzano airport is the nearest. From Verona airport the drive takes just under two hours. Without a car, take the train from Verona to Ponte Gardena and bus 350 up to the village, about four hours in all. A car makes trailheads and other valleys easier to reach.
Tourism here has two seasons. Winter is for skiing, and each December the Saslong piste hosts the men's World Cup downhill and super-G. Walkers come from June to October, and the mountain huts serve dumplings, goulash and strudel. Book early if you want to watch the December races.
Yes. Santa Cristina hosts the men's World Cup downhill and super-G on the Saslong piste every December, and several lifts serve the alpine slopes. Monte Pana adds a cross-country ski centre and two small ski jumps.
Pick Ortisei if you want the valley's main town, known for its wood carving. Santa Cristina is the smaller village between Ortisei and Selva, with the Saslong and Monte Pana close at hand.
Mostly Ladin. Over nine in ten residents speak it as their first language, and it is still taught in the valley's schools. In German the village is St. Christina in Gröden, and in Ladin it is S. Cristina.
Not inside. The 17th-century castle, built by the Wolkenstein counts as a residence with some defensive features, is privately owned and closed to visitors.
