Ortisei St Ulrich suits skiers and summer walkers who want the main town of Val Gardena, with lifts to the Alpe di Siusi and Seceda. The homes are in or close to the village, mostly for four to six, though nothing here comes with a pool.
Ortisei, St Ulrich in German and Urtijëi in Ladin, is the main and most densely populated town in Val Gardena, a town of about 4,700 people at roughly 1,236 metres on the right bank of the Gardena river. Ladin is the majority mother tongue, and woodcarving is the craft it is known for: the parish church is full of local wooden statues, and the valley museum here shows carvings and toys alongside fossils. Three lift systems leave the town: a gondola up to the Alpe di Siusi, a gondola and cable car to Seceda, and a funicular to the Rasciesa. The homes sit in and around the village, most have a garden, and a few sleep eight or more.
The Alpe di Siusi is linked directly to Ortisei by a double-rope gondola from the town.
A mountain above the valley reached from Ortisei by gondola and then cable car.
Reached from Ortisei by a funicular roughly 2.4 km long that takes about six minutes.
Innsbruck airport is just under an hour and a half away by car. Leave the A22 at the Chiusa to Val Gardena exit, about 20 minutes from Ortisei. By train, change at Bolzano for Ponte Gardena, where buses run up the valley. Buses and lifts cover most needs, so a car is optional.
Winter brings skiing across the valley, with World Cup races on the Saslong piste. In summer about a dozen lifts run, and a weekly card covers lifts and the buses to the Sella and Gardena passes. Lifts used only for ski runs close in summer. The Music FestiVal Gardena brings classical music in July and August.
Yes. Public transport and lifts reach most of Val Gardena, and a weekly mobility card covers the lifts and the buses to the Sella and Gardena passes. A car still helps for the drive from the airport.
Take the gondola from the town. A double-rope lift links Ortisei directly to the Alpe di Siusi, so there is no need to drive up.
Very much so for walkers. Around a dozen lifts run in summer, including the gondolas to Seceda and the Alpe di Siusi, and the Music FestiVal Gardena brings classical concerts in July and August.
Ladin is the majority mother tongue in Ortisei, and schools teach in Italian, Ladin and German. That is why the town carries three names: Ortisei, St Ulrich and Urtijëi.
