About St Nicolas
Saint-Nicolas is a commune of about 330 people, a small village and numerous hamlets between 950 and 1,550 m, overlooking four side valleys: Cogne, Valsavarenche, Rhêmes and Valgrisenche. The parish church at La Cure keeps a 12th-century crypt beneath a 17th-century rebuild. The Gaboé torrent has shaped earth pyramids up to 40 m high. This is the birthplace of the abbot Jean-Baptiste Cerlogne, author of the first Valdôtain grammar and dictionary, and a study centre for the Francoprovençal language works from a restored farmhouse at Fossaz-Dessus. Woodcarving, from statuettes to clogs, is the traditional craft. The homes are together in one place, most with one bedroom and sleeping three to five.
