Sarre is a small Aosta Valley town about 5.5 km from Aosta, with a former royal hunting lodge on the hill above the plain. Homes are small, for around five, and about half have a fireplace. It suits touring castles and side valleys from one base.
Sarre is a town of under 5,000 people at about 630 metres, in the Aosta Valley close to the regional capital. Its Royal Castle sits on a hill overlooking the Aosta plain, among steep terraces of vines and apple orchards. Victor Emmanuel II bought the castle in 1869, and the Savoy kings came here to hunt. The homes are tightly clustered. Most are small, sleeping around five, with a garden, and about half have a fireplace. None has a pool.

Turin is the nearest commercial airport. Buses link Aosta with Turin three times a day in about two hours, and trains run hourly to Ivrea in about 80 minutes. A car makes the side valleys and castles much easier.
Pila, the small ski resort above Aosta, is the winter draw, and Aosta holds its Saint Ursus fair at the end of January, as it has for centuries. The road turn-off for the Little St Bernard Pass is open in summer only, while the Great St Bernard tunnel stays open all year.
