Fénis suits couples touring the Aosta Valley's castles, with a turreted medieval castle on a knoll in the village itself. Homes are small, sleeping two to five, and buses to Aosta run only every few hours, so you will want a car.
Fénis is a comune of around 1,800 people at about 540 metres in the Aosta Valley, made up of some twenty hamlets such as Misérègne, Chez-Croiset and Les Crêtes. Its castle stands on a small knoll about 13 km from Aosta. The Challant family enlarged it between 1320 and 1420, with a double ring of battlemented walls, a courtyard with a semicircular stone staircase and wooden balconies, and a 15th-century fresco of Saint George. Restoration campaigns from 1895 and in 1935, in a neo-medieval spirit, shaped the outline you see from the motorway. Since 2009 the village has also been home to the MAV museum of traditional Valdostan craftsmanship. The homes are grouped together in one part of the village.
The regional capital, around 16 minutes away by car, with its Roman theatre, the cathedral and the collegiate church of Sant'Orso.
A valley where the route runs about 20 km along the Buthier stream, past Oyace and Bionaz, to the Place Moulin dam at its end.
Sarre's royal castle was remodelled by the Savoy dynasty in the 18th century, and Saint-Pierre's castle houses the regional natural sciences museum.
Fly to Turin; from the city the drive to Fénis takes a little over an hour. Line 464 buses from Aosta bus station reach Fénis in about 40 minutes, but they leave roughly every four hours, so a car is the practical choice.
Yes. The castle belongs to the Aosta Valley region, which turned it into a museum, and the art objects kept inside can be seen on a guided tour. The attic floor is not open.
Around a quarter of an hour by car. The castle stands about 13 km from the city, and the line 464 bus from Aosta bus station takes about 40 minutes, with several hours between departures.
For small families, yes. Homes here sleep two to five, usually with one or two bedrooms. Pools and gardens vary, so check each listing if either matters.
It works well for castle and valley touring. Aosta is a short drive, and the castles at Sarre and Saint-Pierre and valleys such as Valpelline and Valgrisenche make good day trips.
