Furore, Conca dei Marini and Praiano (central-west coast)

Most of our Amalfi Coast villas are along this stretch. Furore is known for its fjord, a narrow gorge with a tiny beach at the bottom, and Conca dei Marini has a small harbour cove and the Emerald Grotto, visited by rowing boat. Praiano is a quieter neighbour to Positano with sunset views. The Path of the Gods runs on the hills above. Naples airport is around an hour and a half away by road.

Best for: Couples who want sea views and quiet, between Positano and Amalfi

Not for you if: You want to stroll to bars and shops: these villages are spread along steep hillsides.

Positano

Positano's pastel houses tumble down the cliff to a pebble beach and a busy ferry pier. It is the most photographed village on the coast and gets very crowded by day in summer, but evenings are calmer. Boats run to Amalfi and, in season, to Capri. Expect lots of steps from the road to most houses. Naples airport is around an hour and a half away.

Best for: Couples who want the famous view, beach clubs and boat trips

Not for you if: You have mobility problems or a tight budget: Positano is built on steps and is the coast's priciest village.

Minori (near Amalfi and Ravello)

Minori is a small, lived-in town just east of Amalfi, with a broad town beach, the remains of a 1st-century Roman villa and well-known pastry shops. The Path of the Lemons climbs through lemon groves to neighbouring Maiori, and Ravello, with the gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, is on the hill above. Salerno is around 40 minutes by road or under an hour by ferry.

Best for: Families and foodies who want a real village with an easy beach

Not for you if: You want lots of choice: we have very few villas here.

Salerno, Vietri sul Mare and Cava de' Tirreni (eastern end)

Salerno is a lively city with a long seafront promenade, a station on the fast rail line from Naples and Rome, and ferries along the coast to Amalfi and Positano in season. Vietri sul Mare, the first village of the coast, is famous for its painted ceramics. Cava de' Tirreni, just inland, has an arcaded old centre. Naples airport is around 45 minutes to an hour away by road.

Best for: Value, easy trains and ferries, and a real Italian city

Not for you if: You want the classic cliffside Amalfi village: this end of the coast is more town than village.

When to go to Amalfi Coast

May, June and September are the best months, when the sea is warm enough to swim and the crowds are lighter. July and August are hot and very busy, the coast road can grind to a halt and prices peak, especially around Ferragosto on 15 August. Ferries along the coast run from around April to October and are suspended in rough seas. From November to March many hotels, restaurants and beach clubs close, and some villages feel very quiet.
