Thassos is a green, pine-covered island in the northern Aegean, reached by a short ferry from the mainland near Kavala. Limenas (Thassos Town) is the easiest base, the Skala Prinou coast in the west is quieter and handy for the Kavala ferry, and Limenaria in the south-west has a long seafront. Limenas (Thassos Town)

Limenas is the island's main town and ferry port, with ancient remains, an archaeological museum and a harbour lined with tavernas. Ferries from Keramoti take around 35 to 45 minutes and run frequently in summer, and Keramoti is a short drive from Kavala airport. Golden Beach, one of the island's longest and most popular sandy beaches, is a short drive south-east.

Best for: First-timers who want restaurants, the ferry and good beaches close by

Not for you if: You want somewhere sleepy: Limenas is the busiest place on the island in summer.

Skala Prinou and Ormos Prinou (west coast)

This stretch faces the mainland across the bay, with sandy beaches, sunset views and the island's second ferry port, which links to Kavala itself in around an hour and a quarter. Prinos, just inland, is a larger and less touristy village with supermarkets and a weekly market. It is a calmer base than Limenas, and the round-island road makes the rest of Thassos easy to reach.

Best for: Quieter beaches and sunsets, with easy ferry access to Kavala

Not for you if: You want the island's best-known beaches on the doorstep: those are on the east and south-east coasts.

Limenaria (south-west)

Limenaria is the island's second-largest village, with a long seafront promenade of restaurants and shops and a quieter feel than the east side. It makes a good base for exploring the south coast and the hill villages behind it, and Aliki, on the south-east coast, with its ancient marble quarry right by the sea, is a scenic drive away.

Best for: Families who want a seafront promenade and a quieter village base

Not for you if: You want to be near the ferry: Limenaria is close to an hour's drive from Limenas.

Kavala and Nea Iraklitsa (mainland)

A few of our villas are on the mainland coast opposite Thassos. Kavala is a lively port city with an old town climbing up to its castle, and Nea Iraklitsa is a small seaside village a short drive west. Both are well placed for day trips to Thassos and to the archaeological site of Philippi, and Kavala airport is within an hour's drive.

Best for: Town life and day trips, including Thassos and ancient Philippi

Not for you if: You want to wake up on the island: every Thassos day means a ferry crossing.

When to go to Thassos

June and September are the best months: warm sea, open tavernas and quieter beaches. July and August are busy, and the ferry from Keramoti can have long queues, especially on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings, so avoid crossing at those times if you can. May and October are good for walking in the forested interior, though the sea is cooler. Out of season many tourist businesses close and direct UK flights to Kavala stop.
