Büsum suits couples and small parties after a North Sea resort with a shrimp harbour, mudflat walks and boat trips to Heligoland. The beach is man-made and charged for, so it is not a place for natural dunes.
Büsum is a fishing and tourist town of about 5,000 people on the Dithmarschen coast, around 18 km from Heide. Shrimp fishing here is recorded back to 1624, and the harbour still shapes the place: trips to Heligoland, and sea, fishing and nature cruises, leave from it. The beach is an artificial sandy one with a beach fee, and in summer, at low tide, spa guests follow a marching band out on to the Wadden Sea mudflats. A Wadden Sea National Park ranger station and museum are in town, and the lighthouse is a landmark. Our homes sit close together near the centre, mostly small ones for two with a garden. Expect a small seaside town rather than a city break.
Town about 18 km north-east, where the 24 km railway to Büsum begins; most trains from Neumünster run through to the resort.
Boat trips to the island leave from Büsum harbour, alongside sea, fishing and nature trips.
Small Dithmarschen town with St John's Church, once the main meeting place for the district's parishes, and the only medieval urban settlement here.
Coastal Dithmarschen village noted for its tourism and its large salt marshes along the shore.
Büsum has no airport of its own, so fly into a German airport and finish by train or car. The railway runs 24 km from Heide to Büsum, and most trains from Neumünster continue to the resort. Hamburg is the most accessible city in Dithmarschen by road and rail.
Summer is the resort season, and the Kutterregatta, a fishing-boat race, is held on the first weekend in August each year. Mudflat walks depend on low tide, so check tide times for your dates. Outside summer, check that boat trips to Heligoland are running before you plan around them, and budget for the beach fee.
Yes, but it is an artificial sandy beach rather than natural dunes, and the town charges a beach fee. At low tide the Wadden Sea mudflats open up for walking.

Yes, by rail. A 24 km line links Heide with Büsum, and most trains from Neumünster continue to the resort, so the final leg needs no car.
The Kutterregatta, a fishing-boat race, takes place on the first weekend of August. It is a long-running local event that adds to a busy season on the harbour.
