Villelaure suits a family or two couples wanting a pool in the low-lying south Luberon, around 20 minutes from Aix-en-Provence. There are only a handful of homes, and this is a working village rather than one of the famous hilltop ones.
Villelaure is a village of about 3,400 people in the south Luberon, sitting low at an average height of about 170 metres and bordering the town of Pertuis. Its present form dates from 1512, when Jean de Forbin and Antoinette de la Terre resettled it with 19 families from neighbouring villages and Piedmont. The homes are close together in and by the village; they have private pools and sleep four to six. Evenings are quiet, with more choice in Pertuis or Aix. Out of season it is simply an ordinary village going about its business.
The neighbouring town, with the obelisk on place Mirabeau, the Saint-Nicolas church and a railway station on the line to Aix and Marseille.
The nearest city, around 20 minutes by car, with a TGV station about half an hour from Pertuis.
Marseille Provence airport is at Marignane, north-west of Marseille, and Marseille itself is around 45 minutes by car. Without a car, the 908 bus links Villelaure with Pertuis station. Hire a car all the same.
Just about. Bus 908 links Pertuis station with Villelaure centre, and Pertuis has trains to Aix and Marseille. Expect well over an hour and a half from Aix, against around 20 minutes by car.
The site goes back to a Roman settlement called Villa Laura, but the present village dates from 1512, when it was refounded after the Hundred Years War and the Black Death had ruined the south Luberon.
Yes. Private pools are the norm among the homes in Villelaure, and they are the main reason to stay here rather than in a hill village. Homes sleep four to six, so suit a family or two couples.
