Roussillon suits couples and families who want a home with a pool just outside the Luberon's ochre village and its quarry trail. Choice is small, and our homes are grouped together on one slope south-east of the village. The trade-off: in July and August the village is packed by day and the paid car parks fill quickly.
Roussillon is a village of about 1,300 people on an ochre ridge, with the Monts de Vaucluse to the north and the Petit Luberon to the south. House fronts run from pale yellow to deep red, and one of the old quarries, worked until 1930, is now the Sentier des Ocres, a walk of 30 or 60 minutes. Our homes are grouped a little over a kilometre south-east of the village, all with pools and most with fireplaces. Day tours come from Avignon, Aix and Marseille, so the lanes fill by day. Market day is Thursday morning, on the main square. In winter most restaurants and hotels close.
Gordes is built on a rock round its castle, and the Cistercian abbey of Sénanque lies close by. Around 20 minutes' drive.
Former ochre quarry at Rustrel covering more than 100 hectares, with marked trails. Closed in January and on days of high fire risk.
The main town of the Luberon, with a Saturday market held since the twelfth century and over 300 stalls at the height of the season.
Ochre ecomuseum in a former ochre factory about 2 km from the village, with guided tours, open from February to December.
Marseille Provence airport is around an hour by car, and direct flights from London Gatwick take about two hours. Avignon TGV station is around 45 minutes' drive. You need a car: the bus from Avignon TGV takes well over two hours with a change.
Late spring and early autumn are the best times, when the crowds are manageable. Lavender around Sénanque is at its best in late June and early July. In July and August the small village can feel overwhelming by day. Winter is quiet, most restaurants and hotels close, and the ochre trail only reopens in mid-February.
Yes, by day. Roussillon is small enough that high summer can feel overwhelming, and the paid car parks fill quickly in July and August as day tours arrive from Avignon, Aix and Marseille. Staying close by lets you walk the village early or late, outside day-trip hours.
Yes. Buses are sparse: from Avignon TGV the trip takes well over two hours with a change, and Gordes, Apt, the abbey of Sénanque and the supermarkets all need a drive. Our homes are on a slope outside the village rather than in it.
Choose Roussillon for the ochre trail and coloured house fronts. Choose Gordes for its castle on a rock and the abbey of Sénanque close by. They are around 20 minutes apart by car, so either works as a base for both.
Allow about 30 minutes for the short loop or an hour for the longer one. The trail opens daily from mid-February to December, until 7.30pm in summer, and the ochre gets into everything, so wear shoes you do not mind staining.
