Les Deux Alpes suits keen skiers who want a glacier and a long season, with the lifts reaching 3,600 m. The trade-off is space: the homes are mostly one-bedroom apartments for about four, and almost none has a garden.
Les Deux Alpes sits at 1,650 m in Isère, and its lifts climb to 3,600 m over roughly 220 km of pisted runs. It is France's second-oldest ski resort after Chamonix. Our homes are packed into the resort itself, within about a kilometre of each other, and free ski buses run around the resort. Almost all are one-bedroom apartments for about four, with only a small minority having a pool or a sauna and hardly any a garden. The summer ski area on the Girose and Mont de Lans glaciers opens between June and September, and mountain bikers ride the Jandri Express gondola up towards the glacier. Mont-de-Lans and Vénosc, the base villages, lie in the deep valleys to the north and south. For evenings there are bars, including one with mostly British staff that stays open until 2 am.
A neighbouring ski resort with about 249 km of piste and 84 lifts; a connecting bus runs from Les Deux Alpes.
About 71 km to the north-west by road, with TGV trains; Grenoble Alpes-Isère airport is about 1 hr 30 from the resort.
The two base villages of the resort, set in the deep valleys to the north and south.
Mountain park south of Grenoble that covers Vénosc, topped by the 4,102 m Barre des Écrins and popular with hikers and climbers.
Grenoble Alpes-Isère airport is about an hour and a half away by car, and Lyon Saint-Exupéry about two hours, with regular shuttle buses from Lyon. TGV trains serve Lyon and Grenoble. Free ski buses run around the resort, so a car matters less once you arrive.
In winter the lifts run from December to the end of April, and the glacier keeps skiing good late in the season when lower resorts turn slushy. The summer ski area on the glaciers opens between June and September, while the main summer lift season runs from mid-June to the end of August for hiking and mountain biking. Outside those windows the lifts are shut, and some bars close from late April.
Yes. A summer ski area of about 110 hectares opens between June and September on the Girose and Mont de Lans glaciers, at 2,800 to 3,600 m. It is a small area compared with the winter one.
There are about 220 km of pisted runs and the lifts reach 3,600 m, with the village itself at 1,650 m.
Les Deux Alpes has the glacier and the longer season. Alpe d'Huez is larger on paper, with about 249 km of piste and 84 lifts, and the two are linked by a bus rather than by lifts.
It works for active people. Mountain bikers use the Jandri Express gondola, the glacier gives summer skiing, and there are hiking and bike trails, though the summer lift season is short, running mid-June to the end of August.
About 71 km by road, with the resort to the south-east of Grenoble. Grenoble Alpes-Isère airport is about an hour and a half away by car.
