L'Alpe d'Huez suits skiers who want a big linked area from a resort at 1,860 m, and road cyclists in summer. Every home has a sauna and most come with use of a pool, though most sleep around six. Expect to drive up the climb of 21 numbered hairpins made famous by the Tour de France.
L'Alpe d'Huez is a ski resort at 1,860 m on the Grandes Rousses massif, in the commune of Huez above the Oisans. The Alpe d'Huez Grand Domaine links it with Vaujany, Oz-en-Oisans, Auris-en-Oisans and Villard-Reculas: about 250 km of runs on some 70 lifts, with a vertical drop of 2,223 m. The Pic Blanc cable car tops out above 3,300 m and serves only black runs, including the Sarenne. The homes are all close together in the resort. Summer is short, from late June to late August, when the cable cars open for hiking and mountain biking.

Grenoble airport is about an hour and a half away by car. Lyon and Geneva are alternatives, but without a car the transfer from either takes well over three hours. The resort lies 59 km from Grenoble by road, along the RN 1091 through Le Bourg-d'Oisans.
Winter brings the full Grand Domaine, with snowmaking on about 75 km of runs. Summer runs from late June to late August, when cable cars open for hikers and mountain bikers and cyclists tackle the Tour de France climb.

For cyclists and mountain bikers, yes. The 13.8 km climb with its 21 numbered hairpins is a Tour de France classic, each bend signed for a past stage winner, and cable cars open for biking and hiking from late June to late August.
Grenoble works best for drivers, at around 1 hour 34 minutes by car. Lyon and Geneva also work, but without a car the transfer takes over three hours, so a hire car or booked transfer makes sense.
