Port Camargue is the marina district of Le Grau du Roi, and suits boat lovers and small families in compact homes. Nothing here sleeps more than six. There is no old town, only quays, ponds and piers.
Port Camargue was drawn up by Jean Balladur, who also planned La Grande-Motte. The project was launched in 1963 and building began in 1969. It is one of the biggest marinas in Europe, with 4,600 berths, and it is entered by a channel opening to the north-west. Our homes are packed into about a kilometre, mostly one-bedroom apartments and small houses for four, with air conditioning common and a pool in a good number. The Espiguette sand runs close by, and campsites are numerous nearby. A path links the marina to the old fishing port.
Fishing canal beside the marina, lined with boats, old buildings, hotels and cafés, joined by a walking and cycling path.
Beach and dune reserve beyond the marina; the Espiguette sand extends all the way to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.
Medieval walled town up the canal, with ramparts of about 1,650 m, once a departure point for Crusaders.
Marine centre that teaches turtle protection, keeps marine mammals, and has a two-storey shark tank with over 25 species.
Fly to Montpellier-Méditerranée, about 21 km and around 20 minutes from Le Grau du Roi by road, then take a taxi or hire a car. The bus from the airport is slow, about two hours with a change. Within the marina district most homes are close together, but the Camargue itself needs a car.
The Camargue marshes behind the marina are a prime habitat for insects, and their mosquitoes rank among the fiercest in France. Sunshine is reported at over 300 days a year. The Festival of the Sea and Fishermen takes over the port in June, and September brings bull races and water jousting. Check marina services before an off-season visit.
It has 4,600 berths, which makes it the largest marina in Europe, with a sheltered entrance and many nautical services.
Jean Balladur, the architect who also drew up the plans for La Grande-Motte. The project began in 1963 under the Nîmes Chamber of Commerce and Industry as part of the Mission Racine, and construction started in 1969.
There is a dedicated walking and cycling path between the marina and the old fishing port.
Rarely. None of our homes here sleeps more than six, and most are one-bedroom apartments or small houses for around four. Groups of eight or more will need to look elsewhere.
