Sodankylä is a vast Lapland municipality, and our homes lie scattered across it, centred on Luosto fell and Pyhä-Luosto National Park. Nearly all have a sauna. Rovaniemi is the nearest airport, so a car or transfer is part of the plan.
Sodankylä covers more than twelve thousand square kilometres, the second-largest municipality in Finland, yet has only about eight thousand residents. Its wooden church from 1689 is one of the oldest in Lapland. Our homes are scattered across roughly fifty kilometres, and the middle of them is around Luosto, a fell of about 510 metres with a ski resort nearby and what is described as the only open amethyst mine in Europe. Luosto and Pyhä are separate resorts, each a small village with services within walking distance, linked by a trail through the national park. Nearly all homes have a sauna and a fireplace, most sleep around six, and none has a pool. Winter brings the northern lights; around midsummer the sun does not set.

Rovaniemi, about 115 km from Luosto, has the nearest airport, and direct buses run from Rovaniemi to both Luosto and Pyhä. The night train from Helsinki runs all year to Kemijärvi, 47 km from Pyhä-Luosto by bus or car. Homes are far apart, so a car or transfer is needed.
Winter brings the northern lights and the ski season at Luosto. Around midsummer the park has the midnight sun, and in Sodankylä the sun is up from 31 May to 14 July. The sun stays below the horizon for a few days around 20 to 23 December. The Midnight Sun Film Festival is usually held in mid-June.
