Vuokatti and Sotkamo
Half of our Kainuu cabins are around Sotkamo, most of them near Vuokatti, a forested ridge with downhill runs, long floodlit cross-country trails and an indoor ski tunnel used from early summer to December. In summer the same area is for lake swimming, mountain biking and the gorge walk in Hiidenportti National Park. Sotkamo village has the supermarkets. Kajaani airport is around half an hour away.
Best for: Families and skiers who want slopes, trails and a spa nearby
Not for you if: You want real isolation: Vuokatti is Kainuu's main resort and busy in ski holidays.
Ukkohalla and Hyrynsalmi
Ukkohalla is a compact ski area in Hyrynsalmi, with slopes short enough for children and cabins scattered in the forest around the lifts. Cross-country trails run out across the hills, and in summer there is a lake beach, fishing and walking routes. Hyrynsalmi village is small, so stock up before you arrive. Kajaani airport is about an hour's drive south.
Best for: Families who want a small ski hill without the crowds
Not for you if: You want restaurants and nightlife after skiing; evenings here are spent in the cabin.
Paljakka and Puolanka
Paljakka is a small ski resort on a high, snowy fell in the north of Puolanka, with long cross-country routes into the forest. The protected Paljakka nature reserve next door is old spruce woodland, and in summer the trails link up with walking routes towards Ukkohalla. Hepoköngäs, one of Finland's tallest waterfalls, is also in Puolanka. Kajaani airport is around an hour and a half away.
Best for: Cross-country skiers and hikers who like old-growth forest
Not for you if: You need shops nearby: Puolanka village is about half an hour from the fells.
Kuhmo and Suomussalmi (eastern wilderness)
This is the remote end of Kainuu, close to the Russian border. Kuhmo runs organised bear-watching hides from spring to late summer and hosts a chamber music festival each July. Suomussalmi has the Raate Road Winter War memorial, and Hossa National Park, with its canoe routes and rock paintings, lies about 100 kilometres further north. Kajaani is over an hour from either town.
Best for: Wildlife watchers and experienced walkers
Not for you if: You want a choice of cabins: we have only a handful out here.
Kajaani and Lake Oulujärvi (Paltamo, Säräisniemi, Manamansalo, Ristijärvi)
Oulujärvi is one of Finland's largest lakes, and the few cabins here sit near its shores at Paltamo, Säräisniemi and on Manamansalo island, which has long sandy beaches. Kajaani, the regional town, has the airport, a railway station and the ruins of a castle on a river island. Ristijärvi is a small village to the north-east. The airport is under an hour from all of them.
Best for: Anglers and anyone wanting a big lake close to the airport
Not for you if: You want lots of choice; we have very few cabins around the lake.
