London City homes suit couples on a city break who want a base between Angel and Old Street, with Shoreditch bars close by. This is inner London, not the Square Mile, and the homes are small, for two to four, with no outdoor space or air conditioning.
Despite the name, these homes are not in the City of London itself. They sit close together on the Islington and Clerkenwell side of City Road, between Angel and Old Street, just north of the Square Mile. Angel, about 3 km north-north-east of Charing Cross, is one of London's 35 major town centres, with shops, a Vue cinema and the O2 Academy Islington. Old Street runs a mile east across the Islington and Hackney border towards Shoreditch, and its junction with City Road, nicknamed Silicon Roundabout, has drawn tech firms. Around Old Street, Hoxton Square and Great Eastern Street carry the area's late nightlife. Most homes have one bedroom and sleep two, none takes more than four, and none has a garden or air conditioning.
Runs north from Angel; the stretch towards Highbury and Islington station is packed with places to eat, with the Almeida Theatre just off it.
Near the Shoreditch end of Old Street, where Hoxton Square and Great Eastern Street have the liveliest nightlife in the area.
One of the largest open stretches of water in north London; the Regent's Canal passes beneath Angel through the Islington Tunnel.
An antiques and collectables centre near Angel that has been one of London's leading dealers' arcades for about 40 years.
You won't need a car. Angel is on the Northern line, with trains south to Old Street, the City and London Bridge and north to Euston, and Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted all have express rail links into London. Drivers pay the Congestion Charge in the centre and, in older vehicles, the ULEZ charge.
Not quite. They cluster on the Clerkenwell and Islington side of City Road, between Angel and Old Street, just north of the Square Mile. Old Street itself follows an ancient track that skirted the walls of Londinium.
For eating out and theatre it works well. Upper Street, running north from Angel, is lined with restaurants, the Almeida Theatre is just off it, and Angel station puts the City and London Bridge a few stops away on the Northern line.
Tap a contactless bank card, Apple Pay or Google Pay at the barrier, and daily fares are capped. A Visitor Oyster Card covers zones 1 to 6. Trains run from about 5.30am to midnight, with some lines all night at weekends.
Towards Shoreditch it can be. Old Street, Hoxton Square and Great Eastern Street have a lively late scene, so light sleepers should check how far east a home sits before booking.
