Hoxton suits couples and small groups who want East London bars, galleries and the Saturday market at Hoxton Street close to hand. The homes are compact, sleeping two to four, and the streets around Hoxton Square are a nightclub district, so light sleepers should look north.
Hoxton sits in Hackney, north-east of the City of London, boxed in by the Regent's Canal, Old Street, Kingsland Road and City Road. Its two halves feel different. The south is the night-time district, with bars, clubs, restaurants and galleries around Hoxton Square, a garden square laid out in 1683 and ringed by tall Victorian buildings with bars on the upper floors. The north is more residential, a mix of council estates and newer private homes. The Museum of the Home, in former almshouses on Kingsland Road, is free. The homes are close together in the district.
A free museum on the site of almshouses set up on Kingsland Road in 1714, directly opposite Hoxton station.
Forms Hoxton's northern edge; Gainsborough Studios, where Hitchcock worked, stood beside it on Poole Street from 1924 to 1951.
From Heathrow, Elizabeth line trains run to Liverpool Street every 20 minutes, or allow around 45 minutes by road. Locally, Hoxton station is on the Overground's Windrush line, and Old Street on the Northern line is the nearest Tube. Leave the car at home.
Very. The southern half of Hoxton, around Hoxton Square, is an entertainment district packed with bars, nightclubs and restaurants, many of them on the upper floors of old Victorian buildings.
It trades through the week, but Saturday is the day to go. Weekdays focus on household goods; on Saturdays the stalls turn to independent fashion, art and design.
Two serve the area. Hoxton station, behind the Museum of the Home, is on the Overground's Windrush line, and Old Street on the Northern line covers the south-west corner.
Not in the south. The streets near Hoxton Square form a district of bars and nightclubs, while the northern half is more residential, with council estates and newer private housing.
