Canary Wharf suits small groups who want a modern east London base served by the Elizabeth line, the Jubilee line and the DLR. It is an office district first: Thursday and Friday nights are busy, but at weekends most chain bars close and the estate goes quiet.
Canary Wharf is a privately owned business district on the Isle of Dogs, built from 1988 on the West India Docks after the port closed. One Canada Square, at 235 metres, was the UK's tallest building from 1991 to 2012. Five interconnected malls hold more than 300 shops and over 80 restaurants, bars and cafés, and there are two cinemas. Jubilee Park is a roof garden above Jubilee Place, and the Crossrail Place Roof Garden tops the Elizabeth line station. The homes are compact, for two to four, and sit close together. This is glass and water, not old London.
In a Grade I listed Georgian warehouse at West India Quay, telling the story of Docklands from Roman times to the present; entry is free.
A city farm with a shop and café on the Isle of Dogs, reached from Mudchute DLR station.
Southbound DLR trains from Canary Wharf call at Greenwich, and riverboats from Canary Wharf Pier run to North Greenwich.
Riverboats from Canary Wharf Pier head up the Thames to Tower and Westminster, a slower and more scenic way into town.
London City Airport is about 3 miles away by DLR, changing at Poplar. Heathrow has direct Elizabeth line trains to Canary Wharf, and the Jubilee line links London Bridge and Waterloo. You will not need a car.
Canary Wharf works in any month, since the five malls are interconnected. January brings the Winter Lights Festival and summer the Dragon Boat Race. Choose your evenings with care: Thursday and Friday are the busiest in the bars, while weekends are quiet and many bars close.
For transport, yes. The Elizabeth line runs direct to Liverpool Street and Paddington, the Jubilee line reaches London Bridge, Waterloo and the West End, and the DLR goes to Bank and Greenwich. The big sights are elsewhere, so you will be travelling in each day.
Very. Most of the chain bars serve office workers and close at weekends, with only one or two staying open. For an older pub, The Grapes has stood by the river since 1583, near Westferry DLR station.
Take the DLR and change at Poplar. The airport is only about 3 miles from Canary Wharf, so it is the handiest London airport for a short stay here.
A few, mostly on rooftops. Jubilee Park sits above Jubilee Place, and the Crossrail Place Roof Garden, on top of the Elizabeth line station, is planted by hemisphere either side of the Meridian line.
