Sydals suits quiet family weeks on the south end of Als island, with farmland, Flensburg Fjord shores and Sønderborg to the west. There is no town centre, so expect to drive for shops and meals, and the water is sheltered Baltic rather than surf.
Sydals is the name of the former municipality covering the southern part of Als, about 95 square kilometres of villages and farmland: Høruphav, Lysabild, Mommark, Skovby, Sønderby and Tandslet. Our houses are scattered across it, around 15 km east of Sønderborg in a straight line. The Kegnæs peninsula on the south coast has about 600 residents, low moraine hills of around 20 m and a lighthouse from 1896 that visitors can climb between May and September. The south coast faces the outer Flensburg Fjord, the westernmost inlet of the Baltic, so this is sheltered water. Evenings are your own: about half the houses have a sauna and most have a fireplace. Outside summer the lanes and farmland are empty.
Built in 1896 and 18 m tall, open May to September; visitors can climb to the top.
Town of about 28,500 on both sides of Alssund, with a castle museum on the history and culture of the area, open all year.
Site of the 1864 battle on the mainland side of Alssund, with the rebuilt Dybbøl Mill and an 18 April commemoration.
A ferry runs from Mommark in Sydals to Søby on the island of Ærø.
Billund Airport has British Airways flights from Heathrow and Norwegian from Gatwick listed. Sønderborg Airport has flights to Copenhagen. You will want a car: the houses are spread over farmland and villages, and two road bridges at Sønderborg link Als to the mainland.
Summer gives the most open: Kegnæs Lighthouse can be climbed from May to September, and every July Sønderborg holds Scandinavia's biggest tilting festival, in medieval style. The Dybbøl commemoration falls on 18 April. Winter is quiet and suits a fireplace week; the lighthouse is shut then, though Sønderborg's castle museum stays open all year.
Sydals is the southern part of Als, an island off the east coast of South Jutland. It was a municipality of about 95 square kilometres until 2007, when it was merged into Sønderborg. Our houses sit roughly 15 km east of Sønderborg in a straight line.
Yes, for a quiet week. The south coast faces the sheltered Flensburg Fjord rather than open sea, the land is low farmland, and Sønderborg has a castle museum for wet days. There is little else on foot.
Yes. A ferry runs from Mommark, a village in Sydals, to Søby on the island of Ærø. Check the operator's timetable for your dates. A separate ferry from Fynshav, also on Als, goes to Bøjden on Funen.
Sønderborg Castle holds a museum on the history and culture of the area and is open all year. The Universe science park, formerly Danfoss Univers, lies just north of town.
