Haderslev works for families after a roomy Danish house near a fjord town with a cathedral dating from the mid-13th century. Most homes are houses with around three bedrooms and a fireplace, but private pools are rare, and the homes are scattered over a wide area rather than grouped in one resort.
Haderslev is a town of about 22,000 people in a valley that runs from Vojens down to Haderslev Fjord, which cuts in from the Little Belt. The old centre keeps houses and buildings from 1400 to the early twentieth century, cobbled alleys, the cathedral, and an inner pond with a white-chalked church on its bank. Our homes are spread around the area, and their middle lies south-east of the centre, so expect countryside and coastal summer-cottage land more than a street of shops. Most sleep around six, and many have a fireplace. Flovt Strand to the east is a sandy beach. For evening events, the one fixed date we found is the three-day Kløften Festival, held each summer in the park of that name near the centre.
Sandy beach east of Haderslev, 400 m long, with a Blue Flag label, a toilet and a protected nature area behind it.
Island in Haderslev municipality, reached by ferry from the mainland town of Årøsund across the Årø Strait.
Opened in 1968 beside the original Lego factory and Billund Airport, and about an hour from Haderslev by road.
Former municipality merged into Haderslev in 2007, at the top of the valley that leads down to the town and its fjord.
Billund Airport is about 72 km away, roughly an hour by road, with British Airways from Heathrow and Norwegian from Gatwick listed at the time of writing. Public transport needs a change and takes about two and a half hours, so hire a car; many homes sit outside the town itself.
Summer is the time for Flovt Strand, a fine-sand beach with a Blue Flag, and the Kløften Festival fills three days in the town park. The rest of the year the draw is the cathedral and old streets, and the fireplaces in the houses matter more than the sea. Check opening dates for local attractions before a winter trip.
Yes. Flovt Strand, east of Haderslev, is a 400 m beach of fine sand with a sandy seabed, a Blue Flag label and a toilet. There is a scattering of pebbles in the sand, and a few at the water's edge.
Yes, as a day trip by car. Legoland Billund stands beside Billund Airport, which is about an hour's drive from Haderslev by the route planner's figures, so it makes a long day out rather than a short hop.
Compact and historic: houses and buildings dating from 1400 to the early twentieth century, cobbled streets and alleys, Sankt Severin Church beside the inner pond, and the cathedral. The old castle, Haderslevhus, stood east of the cathedral until fires destroyed it.
Fireplaces are common and a fair number have a sauna, but private pools are rare. The houses are mostly around three bedrooms, so check each listing for the facilities you want.
Årø is an island reached by ferry from Årøsund, a mainland town in Haderslev municipality. The Årø Strait separates the island from the rest of the municipality, and the ferry runs between Årøsund and the town of Årø on the island.
