Børkop works for families wanting a holiday home near Mørkholt's Blue Flag beach, with Billund and Legoland a short drive west. It is a small railway town, so most evenings are spent at the house, and part of the Mørkholt shore is rocky rather than sandy.
Børkop is a railway town of a few thousand people on the line between Vejle and Fredericia, with a working sixteenth-century watermill and a Thomas Dambo troll sculpture beside it. The homes are clustered close together, within about two kilometres of one another, so the town is for shopping rather than evenings out. Most houses sleep around six with three bedrooms and a fireplace; a sauna turns up in some, and a private pool is rare. Mørkholt, the local beach, sits in a holiday home and camping area. Its Vognkær Enge section is fine sand with a bathing jetty, while Mørkholt Hage is quite rocky and more built up. Out of season there is little to do at night beyond the house itself.
Blue Flag beach between Vejle and Fredericia with fine sand at Vognkær Enge, a bathing jetty, toilets and a family-friendly feel.
Fortress town founded in 1650, where a walk around the city walls takes about an hour.
Home of the first Legoland, opened in 1968, 27 km west of Vejle; Billund Airport is about 35 minutes from Børkop by car.
Fredericia's Blue Flag beach of golden sand, with views across to Funen, though there is no lifeguard.
Billund Airport is the closest, about 35 minutes by car, and the train to Vejle plus bus 43 takes about an hour. Børkop has its own station on the Vejle to Fredericia railway, and bus 350 runs close to Mørkholt Beach, but a car makes the beach and Legoland far simpler.
Legoland and the beach are the draw, and the Danish school summer holiday is the busy time. Outside summer the shore is quiet and the town is the place for shops. Fireplaces make a shoulder-season weekend workable, but expect walks rather than swimming.
Yes. Billund, where Legoland is, lies about 35 minutes from Børkop by car, so day trips are easy while you stay in a quieter spot near the beach.
Partly. The Vognkær Enge section is fine sand with a bathing jetty, while Mørkholt Hage is quite rocky, with a sheltered corner of tables and a grill. Mørkholt has a Blue Flag.
It has its own station on the Vejle to Fredericia line. The station is no help for the beach, though, so expect to drive or take bus 350, which runs close to Mørkholt.
Billund, around 35 minutes by car. Without one, a train to Vejle and bus 43 to the airport takes about an hour, which is workable but awkward with luggage.
