Ålbæk suits groups and large families who want a Kattegat-side base halfway between Frederikshavn and Skagen, with saunas and fireplaces. Skagen and its summer crowds are further up the road. Few homes have a pool.
Ålbæk is a small town of around 1,400 people beside Ålbæk Bay, on the Kattegat side of Jutland's northern tip, roughly halfway between Frederikshavn and Skagen on the Skagen railway line and national road 40. The homes here lean large: more than half sleep eight or more, and a few sleep far more. Most have a sauna and a fireplace, which suits big family gatherings. Skagen lies north, with Denmark's main fishing port, the Skagens Museum and Grenen, where two seas meet. Ålbæk itself is quiet in the evening, while Skagen's harbour quay is lined with restaurants. Out of season, check opening hours before you go.
Fishing town and art colony at the tip of Jutland, with Skagens Museum holding work by the painters who gathered here.
Denmark's northernmost point, where the North Sea and the Baltic meet, reached by a sand train that runs between Easter and week 43.
One of the biggest migrating dunes in Europe, in the Skagen area, creeping east by around 15 metres a year.
Port town 41 km south of Skagen, with Ålbæk roughly halfway between, and ferries to Gothenburg and Oslo.
Fly to Aalborg: the airport is about an hour from Ålbæk by car, roughly 77 km. Trains also run to Ålbæk station from Lindholm station, but a car is the practical choice for beaches, Skagen and anything off the railway.
Summer is peak season in Skagen, when the population swells several-fold and traffic builds. Outside it the peninsula is far quieter, and the lighthouse opens only on weekends in some spring and autumn periods. The sand train to Grenen runs between Easter and week 43, so check dates for the shoulder seasons.
Yes, roughly halfway between Frederikshavn and Skagen, with Skagen the next major stop north. National road 40 and the Skagen railway both pass through.
Yes, beside Ålbæk Bay on the Kattegat. The Kattegat is the sea on this side of the peninsula.
Most do, and most have a fireplace. A few sleep far more than average, so big groups can find a fit. Few have a private pool.
Less than Skagen, which swells to several times its normal population in the main season. Ålbæk stays smaller, but you will meet the traffic on the road north.
By car in about an hour. A train from Lindholm station to Ålbæk also runs, but a car is better for beaches and Skagen.
