Aakirkeby suits families who want a base between Dueodde's fine white sand and the forest trails of Almindingen. It is a small inland town of about 2,100 people, so the sea is a drive away, not a walk. Most homes here sleep around six, and a fireplace is common.
Aakirkeby sits in the middle of the southern half of Bornholm, between Rønne and Nexø, and is the island's third-largest town. The church dates from the mid-12th century, and a whitewashed windmill from 1865 stands about 3 km east on the road to Nexø. Our homes lie mostly south of the town, towards the southern coast, and are spread over several kilometres rather than grouped together. Dueodde, on the southern tip, has very fine white sand, dunes rising to about 12 metres and a sea that stays shallow for roughly 100 metres. It is crowded in July and August. North of town, Almindingen is a forest of about 38 square kilometres with marked walks. With only a couple of thousand residents, evenings mean cooking at the house or a short drive.
Bornholm's largest beach on the southern tip, with fine white sand, boardwalks and a lighthouse built in 1962 that is the tallest on the island.
Denmark's third-largest forest, in the centre of the island, with the Ekkodalen rift valley and four marked walks of 4 to 5 km.
At 162 metres the highest point on Bornholm, in Almindingen, with a viewing tower from 1899.
The island's largest town on the southwest coast, with the ferry port and the airport about 5 km from the centre.
Fly to Copenhagen, then take DAT's flight to Bornholm Airport, about 5 km south-east of Rønne. Ferries run to Rønne from Køge, south of Copenhagen, and a catamaran runs from Ystad in Sweden. With homes spread south of the town, a car is the practical choice.
Bornholm is known as the sunshine island, with about 1,809 hours of sun a year and weather that stays fairly warm until October. Rainfall averages around 489 mm a year. Tourism peaks in summer, and Dueodde is crowded in July and August. June and September give the forest and beaches with less company.
Not within walking distance, because the town is inland in the middle of southern Bornholm. Our homes lie mostly south of it, nearer the coast, and Dueodde on the southern tip is the island's largest beach.
Dueodde has very fine white sand, dunes up to about 12 metres and a sea that is shallow for roughly 100 metres before it deepens. Boardwalks run along the beach. It is crowded in July and August.
Yes if you like walking. Almindingen covers about 38 square kilometres in the centre of Bornholm, with four marked walks of 4 to 5 km, the Ekkodalen rift valley and Rytterknægten, the island's highest point at 162 metres.
Aakirkeby had 2,109 residents at the start of 2026, making it Bornholm's third-largest town. It is small, with a church from the mid-12th century and a whitewashed windmill from 1865 east of town.
The town itself is small, but Dueodde is crowded in July and August. Tourism is concentrated in summer, and Bornholm's weather stays fairly warm into October, so September is a calmer month.
