About Gudhjem
Gudhjem is a small harbour village perched on a hillside, with alleyways leading down to a harbour that was blasted out of granite. A waterfront smokehouse sells smoked herring, and Bornholm's first smokehouse opened here in 1866. The homes are spread over about five kilometres around the village; some have a pool and a good number have a fireplace. The coast is rocky rather than sandy, and a dip in the Baltic at sunset is the local habit. The village has numerous restaurants for its size. Outside summer, expect it to be much quieter.
Is Gudhjem right for you?

Getting to Gudhjem
Fly to Copenhagen and on to Bornholm Airport outside Rønne, or take the train from Copenhagen to Ystad and the fast ferry to Rønne, about 1 hour 20 minutes. The whole trip from Copenhagen takes two and a half to three hours. A bus runs from Rønne harbour to Gudhjem, but a car helps.
When to go to Gudhjem
Summer is the busy season, when parking in the village gets tricky and the Christiansø boats run several times a day. Outside high summer it is calmer, and the cliff boat trips run for most of the year. Sand is elsewhere on the island, notably the fine white beach at Dueodde. In winter, check which restaurants and boats are running before you go.

Gudhjem villa holidays: questions answered
Is there a beach in Gudhjem?
Not a sandy one. Gudhjem sits on the rocky coast, and people take a dip from the harbour area instead. For sand, drive to Dueodde, whose sand is so fine it was once used in hourglasses, or try the beach at Melsted.
How do I get to Christiansø from Gudhjem?
By passenger boat from Gudhjem harbour, which takes about an hour. Two quays are reserved for the Christiansø ferry, which makes several trips a day, and the first sails at 10 am.
What is Sol over Gudhjem?
It is Bornholm's national dish, a herring speciality that takes its name from Gudhjem. The village still has an active smokehouse, where herring has been smoked since 1866.
Is Gudhjem good for dogs?
Yes, dogs are allowed at Gudhjem harbour. Rules on beaches vary, so check the signs where you swim.
Is Gudhjem steep?
Yes. The village sits on a hillside with alleyways leading down to the harbour, and the three free car parks are above the town, 500 to 850 metres from the water, so expect to walk down and back up.
