Kukljica, on the south-east of Ugljan, is a good choice for families after sandy beaches under pine shade and a garden at the house. Just over half the homes have a private pool. Getting here takes effort: a ferry from Zadar to Preko, then a drive or bus down the island.
Kukljica is a fishing and tourist village of about 630 people near the Ždrelac Strait, and the only settlement in its own small municipality. The old village has orange-tiled roofs set around a large natural inlet and port, with a green peninsula beyond. Its beaches are sandy: Sabuša, Kostanj, Zelena Punta and Jelenica, shaded by centuries-old pines. The restored 13th-century church of St Jerome stands at the Kostanj cove. The homes are spread over two or three kilometres; every one has a garden, just over half a private pool, and most sleep six or fewer.
