Pakoštane and Drage suit families and groups who want gravel beaches and pine woods on one side and Vransko Lake on the other. Zadar airport is about 35 minutes away by car. Both villages are quiet, so a car matters.
Pakoštane is a municipality of about 4,100 people spread over four settlements, and Drage is the next village along, around five minutes away by bus or taxi. Both sit on the narrow strip of land between the sea and Vransko Lake. The shore is known for gravel beaches with pine woods behind them, not sand. The lake is the largest in Croatia, a nature park with a special bird reserve and a boardwalk for bird watching on its shore; in places it lies less than a kilometre from the sea. Evenings are low-key, and Materine užance, a food event with local dishes such as octopus and pršut, runs during the summer season. About half the homes have a private pool, and most sleep around six. Plan to cook in at least some evenings.
Croatia's largest lake and a protected nature park with a bird reserve, just inland from the shore, with a boardwalk for bird watching.
Historic settlement about 6 km north of Pakoštane, on the far side of the lake.
Neighbouring municipality that also borders Lake Vrana, an easy change of scene from Pakoštane by car.
Zadar airport is about 35 minutes by car from Drage and about 33 from Pakoštane. Buses run to Drage from Zadar bus station, and a five-minute bus or taxi links the two villages, but a car is far easier for beaches, supermarkets and the lake.
Summer is the beach season, and it is also when Pakoštane holds Materine užance, a food event built around local dishes such as boiled octopus, shellfish and pršut. Outside high summer the lake and its birds make the better day out. Check restaurant and café opening times before a spring or autumn visit.
Mostly gravel. Pakoštane is a tourist village with many gravel beaches and pine woods, so bring water shoes for small children.
About 4 km, or around five minutes by bus or taxi. Walking takes close to 50 minutes, which is why most guests drive between the two.
Yes if you like birds and quiet walks. It is a nature park and a Ramsar listed wetland, and the shore has a boardwalk for bird watching; it suits a half day rather than a full one.
About half do, so filter for a pool if you want one. Gardens are about as common, and most homes sleep around six, with few taking more than eight.
