Kršan suits families and groups wanting a private pool in quiet inland Istria, 12 km north of Labin and west of Učka. Most homes here have a private pool and many sleep eight or more. The coast is not on the doorstep, so every beach day starts with a drive.
Kršan is a small village of about 230 people, built on a rocky karst hill around a castle first recorded in 1274. Its four-sided tower still stands, along with a town gate and a 17th-century parish church of St Anthony. The village heads a municipality of 23 settlements, and the homes are in and around it rather than on the coast. North-east of the village lies Čepić field, the farmland left when Lake Čepić was drained in 1930, with the slopes of Učka beyond. It is farming country rather than a resort, so plan on cooking at the house or driving out for restaurants.
A village about 6 km east of Kršan, on the western slopes of Učka beside Čepić field, with a ruined medieval castle on a steep cliff, first recorded in 1102.
A walled hill village above the bay of the same name, where a church of St George holds the Plomin inscription in the Glagolitic alphabet.
Fly to Pula. From the city the drive to Kršan is about 54 km and takes around an hour, while Rijeka is about 47 minutes away by car. Buses from Pula reach Vozilići in about an hour and a quarter, but you will want a car for beaches and shopping.
Not within walking distance. Kršan is an inland village 12 km north of Labin, on the western side of Učka, so a swim in the sea means a drive. In return, most homes here have a private pool.
Reasonably so. Half the homes sleep eight or more and the largest take ten, and a private pool is the norm. Check each listing for bedroom layouts and outdoor space before you book.
It is a medieval castle first recorded in 1274 as Castrum Carsach. Only its four-sided tower survives from the original building, and the village grew up around it on a rocky hill beside Čepić field.
