Sankt Leonhard im Pitztal suits keen skiers who want glacier snow from autumn to early summer, at the head of the Pitztal. Homes are scattered along the inner valley, many with a garden. This is a thinly settled string of hamlets, so expect to drive between your home and the lifts.
St Leonhard is less a village than a parish of hamlets strung along about 25 km of narrow valley floor, from Zaunhof at 1,291 metres up to Mittelberg at 1,736 metres, the last year-round settlement. It is one of the largest municipalities in Tyrol by area, with only about 1,400 people, and its highest point is the north summit of the Wildspitze. Plangeross took off as a resort once its road was finished in 1956, and Mandarfen became a mountain sports base after the Rifflsee and glacier lifts were built. The climate is harsh, with a growing season of about four months. The homes are spread around the valley; many have a garden and a few sleep large groups.
From Mittelberg the Pitz Express, an underground funicular, climbs to 2,840 metres in about eight minutes.
The largest lake in the Ötztal Alps, reached by gondola from Mandarfen to about 2,300 metres, with a loop path round the water.
Innsbruck airport is about an hour away by car. Without one, take the train to Imst-Pitztal and bus 310 up the valley, about two and a half hours in all; the line ends at Mittelberg. With homes spread along the valley, a car is the practical choice.
Skiing on the glacier runs from mid-September to early June, so this is one of the places to ski in autumn or late spring. In summer the Rifflsee gondola opens up high walks and hut-to-hut routes, and rafts go out on the lake daily.
On the glacier, from mid-September to early June. The Pitz Express carries skiers up from Mittelberg, and there is also a high-altitude cross-country trail at around 2,600 metres, up to 6 km long.
To 3,428 metres. The Wildspitzbahn runs from the top of the Pitz Express at 2,840 metres to the Hinterer Brunnenkogel and is described as the highest cable car in Austria.
For walkers, yes. The Rifflsee gondola from Mandarfen runs to about 2,300 metres, where trails start, from a gentle loop round the lake to high-level and hut-to-hut routes.
The upper hamlets. Mandarfen has the Rifflsee gondola and Mittelberg, at the head of the valley, the Pitz Express, while Zaunhof and St Leonhard itself sit lower down the valley, below 1,400 metres.
